Thousands crowded the streets and sidewalks near and in front of the Stonewall Inn for a star-studded concert and rally celebrating the 50th anniversary of the 1969 rebellion that sparked an LGBQT revolution in this country.

Lady Gaga, Whoopi Goldberg, Alicia Keys, and drag performers led off the celebration with celebrities, including Donatella Versace, and visitors from around the world converging to reflect on what happened 50 years ago.

Actor Robert De Niro sent a video greeting to the Proud crowd — and former President Obama sent a letter read by Valerie Jarrett, his former senior adviser, in which he praised LGBQT progress as “the results of countless acts of courage and quiet heroes spanning the generations of our heroes.”

Most of the streets outside the iconic gay bar were blocked off to accommodate the massive daytime concert audience and the evening rally. In 1969, the gay bar’s patrons resisted the NYPD raid, sparking days of protests and longer-term organizing that elevated the cause of LGBTQ rights around the country – and the world starting in New York City.

The NYPD reported no arrests or issues.
