Firefighters were called to UNICEF’s midtown headquarters Thursday after a smoke alarm went off in the basement. The building was evacuated as firemen searched inside for the source of the smoke. About an hour later, after smoke was seen leaking from the cracks of the sidewalk, firefighters were able to determine that smoke was coming from an electric utility closet that was adjacent to the building’s basement.
